Council Election on 31 March This Year

The next 10 weeks will be challenging with the local government elections happening whilst I continue with the business of Council. I've announced I'm running for a second term and I'll shortly be formally launching my campaign. I know that the people of Cairns want jobs and a strong economy; they want Cairns to be the most liveable city in regional Australia, and they want a Council that can make tough decisions with the future in mind.

That's what I've been delivering over the past three and a half years and that's what I will continue to do in the future. Many people have offered to assist and there will be more details later as to how you can help.

Welcome to ValSchier.com.au

Val Schier - Mayor, Cairns Regional CouncilI was delighted to be elected as the first female Mayor of the newly amalgamated Cairns Regional Council in March 2008.

Being in this position has given me a unique opportunity to influence the future direction of our region which is blessed by having two world heritage areas on the doorstep: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforests.

My Council has increased the focus on community engagement, sustainability and the environment whilst implementing strategies to support economic development.

It's been a challenge, with a diverse group of councillors, huge infrastructure needs - water, theatres, flood mitigation, public transport, sporting facilities - the increased demand for services, the global financial crisis and downturns in tourism and construction impacting heavily on the economy and employment.

I feel privileged to lead a Council which has set a vision to improve our well-being and tropical lifestyle and to position us, both nationally and internationally, as a significant region.

Please feel free to browse my website and get the latest news on what is happening. I also circulate a periodic e-newsletter to which you can subscribe. I am always interested to hear from the people from inside and outside our region; don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or comments.

This website is completely independent of Council and is personally funded.
