swearing-in-day-all-councilorsCairns Regional Council was formed on 15 March 2008, as a result of the State Government's merger of Cairns City and Douglas Shire Councils.

The incumbent Cairns Regional Council was elected for a four-year term in March 2008. The Mayor and ten councillors were sworn in on 3 April 2008.

The councillors represent ten divisions, and each is elected by eligible voters in each division. The Mayoralty is decided on a majority popular vote across the entire local government area, which has over 86,700 enrolled voters.
