Earth Hour 2010: 27 March
Monday, 01 March 2010 20:19

Council will be involved again in the international Earth Hour event to be held at 8.30pm on Saturday 27 March. We launched it a couple of weeks ago with a competition for people to make short videos on what's wonderful about living in TNQ and how they are saving energy , cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing global warming. The best videos will be highlighted at City Place, Cairns on March 27th.

Whilst it's great that people turn off their lights for one hour on 27th March, the message is that it's Earth Hour, Every Hour and we need to live our lives with daily cuts to our consumption of energy. This could be by walking or riding to work or school, eating food grown locally, turning off appliances that are not being used, recycling, taking used clothes to an Op Shop or using re-fillable water bottles.

It's important that we work towards a low carbon future and follow the model of Sydney which started a global movement following their first Earth Hour initiative in 2007
