International Womens Day celebrations

This year I have convened and chaired a new International Women's Day Committee to broaden the scope of the week of celebrations and to make sure that we have free events as well as ticketed ones. I am delighted with the final program which you can see on the Council website.

Highlights will be

a free morning tea at Council at 10am on Monday 8th March where we will launch the Red Cross Women in War exhibition which will run until the 17th March in the Council foyer in Spence St. There are several guest speakers that morning including Professor Hurryet Babacan the Foundation Director of James Cook Uni's new Cairns Institute.

Other events include free performances at City Place and talks and events in libraries across the region. The Association of Women Educators has managed to attract the redoubtable Dale Spender whose dinner speech on Saturday 13th March will no doubt be interesting, challenging and provocative. There's an interfaith service at the Buddhist Centre, Women in Song at the Tanks, a Gals at the Gallery event and a free Women on Wheels clinic to teach women basic vehicle maintenance.

Check out the program and join regional women in this week of both celebrations and contemplation of the much less privileged role of women in other societies.
