Joe Vella's wonderful restoration of the old picture theatre on Mulgrave Road was applauded on 2 June 2010 with the inaugural Excellence in Urban Design Awards. Council's Urban Design Advisory Board nominated and discussed a number of examples of good design before determining that an inaugural three awards would be made. The other winners were RPS, formerly Conics, at 135 Abbott St and Christie's for their restoration of the Boland Centre on the corner of Lake and Spence St. I would like to congratulate the owners, architects and builders who were involved in these stunning restorations. Throughout the 1990's and 2000's many people perceived that the character of Cairns was being lost with rapid developments and buildings not reflecting the style of Cairns. The Urban Design Awards will recognise the people who are passionate about ensuring that the Cairns region has innovative and excellent design. |
