New Life for Empty City shops: Beautiful Spaces
Saturday, 17 July 2010 06:50
I was delighted to launch the Beautiful Spaces project on 7 July with three creative businesses opening shops in Lake St, south of Spence Street.

The project, a partnership between Council, the Chamber of Commerce (well done Antonia Moore and Danny Betros), shop owners and emerging artists and designers aims to fill empty shops, provide an opportunity for emerging artists, craftspeople and designers to get started in business, create a sense of vibrancy in the city centre and make it attractive for both locals and tourists.

Local designer Angela Arena has her one-off designs at Fashion Arena (33 Lake St), Maree Gordon-Cooke and Christine Gallagher are doing Ozi Chalk Art next door and across the road is Gabriella Ehrmann with Kings, Queens and Vagabonds a shop with silk art, shawls, wraps, wall hangings, usable objects, leatherwork and cards. None of these businesses are competing with current businesses.

Expressions of interests from artists, craftspeople and designers have flooded in with 19 other people on a waiting list for empty shops. A great partnership yielding fantastic results.
