Peace Park Opened in Peace Week

Ten years ago when the International Year and Decade of Peace was proclaimed, some Cairns residents approached the previous Council about building a Peace Park somewhere in the city. For a variety of reasons the proposal never gained support. Fortunately, Martin Truman persisted, did a delegation to the full Council and during Peace Week this year I was pleased to open stage one of a Peace Park : a space for reflection and contemplation, and for people to take time out of their busy days. We now have a monument - with peace principles articulated - near a shady tree on the Esplanade just north of the hospital. Stage 2 will include seating and landscaping of the space. Thanks Martin for being determined, for working with Council staff and making sure that community ideas can take shape.
