Back Zoning of Hill Slopes into Conservation

It has taken longer that I would have liked - over two years since this new Council was elected - but last month Council moved to amend the Cairns Plan to "back zone" 26 hill slopes lots, from the Northern Beaches to Bentley Park, into conservation. Residents have made it clear that the "green face of Cairns" is very important to them and they do not want us to be approving developments on steep hillslopes that destroy habitats and the links between coastal lowlands and mountain ranges, and are visually intrusive.

The Council decision is only the first step in a process which includes writing to the Minister of Infrastructure and Planning, public notification and consideration of feedback. Landowners of each site have been informed. Thanks must go to Mark Buttrose and the Save our Slopes committee who have been passionate about this issue for many years and who have continued to lobby and advocate for Council action.
