Another initiative of my Council is the Tropical Innovations Awards which will be held for the first time on 5th November this year. Most people do not realise just how many creative and innovative inventors, innovators and researchers we have in this region.
These awards, spearheaded by Council's new, small Economic Development unit and supported by James Cook University, Advance Cairns, Troplinks and the state Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovations (DEEDI) will showcase their talents and give them the recognition they deserve. The awards will also strengthen our identity as leaders in Tropical Expertise and I am expecting national media and scientific interest and involvement: I know the ABC's New Inventors are keeping a keen eye on the initiative and Robin Williams from the ABC's Science Show will be one of the MC's on the night. Categories are: Emerging Innovation; Tropical Innovation; Eco-innovation; Innovation of the Year, for which there is a $10,000 prize; and also a People's Choice award.The awards are open to individuals or businesses residing in the Cairns, Tablelands, Cassowary Coast and Cook council areas. Entries have closed for 2010 but you can get more details and guidelines at www.cairns.qld.gov.au.
