I was pleased to be a guest speaker at the Queensland Events Regional Conference held in Rockhampton recently. The panel discussion was broadcast on Radio National and I was able to highlight some of the events in this region and explain how important they are in building community pride, showcasing our sportspeople, performers and musicians and bringing those important dollars into the region to help businesses.
I have not heard one negative comment about the Challenge Cairns triathlon and Adventure Festival announced recently - the inaugural in the first week of June 2011 - which will grow into the region's biggest without a doubt. Meanwhile in partnership with community organisations, corporate sponsors and the state government we will also support and grow state-wide and national sporting events, the Cairns Amateurs, the Gordonvale Pyramid Race, Carnivale and the Eclipse Marathon in Port Douglas and the Ukelele, Blues, Chinese New Year, Babinda Harvest, Multi-cultural and Tropical Pride festivals throughout the year. |
