Launching the Cairns Style Design Guide at the Salt House last week was a real pleasure. The Guide describes the "Cairns style" in words, photographs and diagrams and draws on the design elements of buildings like "old Queenslanders." It gives tips, ideas and advice that can be used by architects, builders, landscape designers, gardeners, homeowners and property developers.
It is intended to raise awareness in the community of the choices that can be made to help retain and enhance the distinct tropical style and character of Cairns.
Residents have long been critical of the "concrete boxes" that emerged in the 1980's and 1990's; buildings that were similar to those built in southern cities, which are energy inefficient and do not take account of sustainability indicators or the indoor/outdoor tropical lifestyle we love. The guide can be downloaded from the council website. |
