Chinese New Year: the year of the rabbit
Monday, 31 January 2011 14:19

This year's Chinese New Year celebrations are being ramped up with a partnership between the Cairns and District Chinese Association and the Council. Chinese people have a long association with Cairns since the 1870's and 1880's when they came for the gold rushes and stayed to help pioneer the sugar industry. And, of course, we are trying to attract Chinese visitors to assist our tourism industry.

The celebrations are earlier than usual this year - it all depends on the moon - and will take place at the Cairns Esplanade from 3.00pm on Saturday 29 January. Go along to see Chinese dancing, Lion dances and other performances and music. There'll be market stalls and lots to do for a family outing. FREE of course.

Attractive red lanterns and 40 welcoming banners have gone up on Airport Drive, the Cairns Esplanade and Collins Avenue to welcome the 10,000 Chinese visitors who will come in the next fortnight. Learn how to say "Gong Xi Fai Chai" to our visitors and locals.
