Applications are now open or the 2011 awards. If you have a new idea, process or project you would like to showcase get an application in. The Tropical Innovation Awards recognise, reward and support innovation and inventions across Tropical North Queensland to support economic diversification and sustainability. Last year's finalists received a high level of media promotion, an increased awareness of their innovation and for some has led to direct sales.

• Emerging Innovation - applicants in the early stages of development (patented or not patented) - $5 000 cash prize

• Tropical Zone Innovation - a new award for applicants from all tropical zone countries - $5 000 cash prize

• Eco Innovation Award - must demonstrate a positive environmental benefit or long-term sustainable advantage - $5 000 cash prize

• Business Innovation - must demonstrate a positive economic, social or environmental benefit to enhance the long term sustainability of business in the region - $5 000 cash prize

• Innovation of the Year - overall best invention/innovation (the winner will be selected from the total pool of applicants) - $10 000 cash prize

• People's Choice Award - 10 applications will be chosen from the pool of applicants - $2 000 cash prize.
