Update On City Centre Revitalisation And Entertainment Precinct Masterplans

Council signed off last week on the City Centre Master Plan which has proposals to make the city greener and shadier, and to move pedestrians, cyclists and motorists around the area in a safer way. We'll be prioritising initiatives but the "Greening of Grafton" is likely to get a tick as it will be a main way of connecting the city down past the Convention Centre to the revitalised waterfront.

There will also be talk about what might happen in the area of Shields St between Lake and Grafton precincts where it's proposed that it be a new people's pedestrian space.

Cox Rainer and CA Architects have been busy over the past 6 weeks connecting with a range of people as they finalise the two master plans for the Entertainment Precinct. There's been excellent input from a range of people at the workshops that they've held and the architects are taking on board these ideas. The idea is to make the central plaza a focus point; an active space that will link people into the theatres, community arts spaces and across to the Convention Centre. In discussions the majority of people don't want an "iconic" building as such preferring a space that enhances our outdoor tropical, laid-back lifestyle whilst still being world class. It's a challenge and is very exciting.
