Most people know that the narrow Wrights Creek bridge just south of Edmonton is by far the worst black spot for cyclists on the Bruce Highway in the Cairns region. Big trucks and other vehicles hurtle by at 80 km/hr and the bicycle lane is only about 10 cm wide. Minister Curtis Pitt and I met with Transport Minister Craig Wallace in July and pushed for immediate upgrade to this bridge and told him that the proposed 5-10 year delay is totally unacceptable. Subsequently, the funding to PLAN the upgrade has been secured but we need as many people as possible to comment on-line on the Bruce Highway upgrade strategy so the federal government will revise its priorities. Go to: http://www.dlgp.qld.gov.au/stronger-regions/bruce-highway-upgrade-strategy.html When you get into the comment page you will find a menu on the left side of the page and you can just run down to the Far North section and tell them to make the Wrights Creek bridge safe for cyclists now, not in 5 to 10 years as its current priority is stated. |
