Going to Guam
Sunday, 24 May 2009 20:30

I have to say that my geography improved when I learned that Guam is only 4 hours away from Cairns and in the same time zone. Continental Micronesia flies to Cairns from there 4 times a week.

I agreed to lead a delegation of tourism and business leaders from the Cairns region to Guam from 14 to 17 May.

As the US military is moving its base from Okinawa to Guam, there are opportunities for Cairns businesses to be involved in the "build up" of 20,000 additional people on the tropical island which lies in a similar latitude north of the Equator as Cairns lies to the south.

It's hoped to encourage more Japanese tourists to travel via Guam to visit our region  as well as families from the US airforce and navy bases who do three year stints in Guam.

Here I am with the Lieutenant-Governor, the Honourable Michael Cruz.
