The Green Expo was held at TAFE on Saturday 20 June. Council was one of the partners in this event and showcased many of our services and facilities, with a particular focus on Council's sustainability and climate protection initiatives. These include: • solar libraries, Cities for Climate Protection, Smart Car, etc • recycling and waste management • water demand management including water-wise gardening, Cleaner Seas, recycled water strategy • community education & awareness activities • natural resource management - sediment control, revegetation projects, pest and weed management, Cattana Wetlands etc Most people won't know that the Cairns Regional Council has a Sustainability Officer, Maree Grenfell, who previously worked in Douglas Shire Council. Maree partnered with another of Council's skilled, passionate and enthusiastic staff members, Sarah Faulkner, to deliver a workshop on "Local government & sustainability in your community." Sustainability practices will be a focus for all Council operations as we move to implement the new Corporate Plan. |
