The Freshwater Heritage Trail
Wednesday, 24 June 2009 20:35

I was pleased to join Stratford and Freshwater Community Association members, the Friends of Freshwater, community members and visitors at the opening on Saturday 20 June of the Freshwater Heritage Trail.

Divisional councillor Margaret Cochrane was there too, as was Member for Barron River, Steve Wettenhall.

Four years in the making, this initiative finally came to a conclusion with the assistance of the Council and the drive of Angela Murphy and others. A plaque on a rock near the CWA Hall commemorates the first settlement near a permanent freshwater creek that provided reliable water to those heading off to the Tablelands and the goldfields.

22 sites are marked with interpretative signage and 4 trails are featured, including one that goes past George Moule's former home built in 1919 at 233 Kamerunga Road. Moule family members came from Brisbane for the launch of the trail and there was much catching up, laughter and reminiscing about their childhood in the Freshwater area.

Council is pleased to be able to support community initiatives such as this which bring people together for a common goal, acknowledges our history and heritage and provides an opportunity for a get together for old and recent residents.

In the photo below I am standing with three members of the Moule family, together with Cr Margaret Cochrane, Angela Murphy and Member for Barron River, Steve Wettenhall.
