Queensland Beekeepers' Association

Today I had lunch with beekeepers from all states who were in Cairns for their annual two-day conference. The Queensland Beekeepers' Association has been meeting since 1886 and it was their first visit to Cairns.

Most of them had arrived earlier or were going to stay for the coming weekend, travelling around and spending $$s in our region. I was involved as they wanted to make a presentation and thank the community of Cairns for having been vigilant in preventing the spread of the Asian honey bee to southern centres.

A great part of the mayoral job is the opportunity to meet people with whom one would not usually come into contact. There are all sorts of people in our community who are passionate, engaged, knowledgeable, committed. They put countless volunteer hours into supporting organisations, helping out their members and being the glue that holds our society together. The beekeepers have been delighted with the hospitality extended to them in Cairns and no doubt many of them will come back for a visit.
