Monday, 06 July 2009 09:23

Cairns NAIDOC Week 2009 kicked off on Monday 6th July with the official opening and flag raising at City Place at 10:00am.  This year the theme was honouring our elders, nurturing our youth.

The National Aboriginal and Islanders Observance Committee (NAIDOC) started the national week of Aboriginal and Torres StraiI Islander activities decades ago. Now indigenous and non-indigenous Australians join together for a week of celebrations.

Some of the activities included::
  • an event at Tjapukai on Tuesday
  • a community open day at Wu Chopperen Health clinic from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday
  • music workshops at TAFE all week
  • the march from Munro Martin Park on Friday (9.30am) to the "NAIDOC in the Park Community Day" at Fogarty Park on the Esplanade
  • and a Family Fun day at Muddies playground from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday.

Cairns Regional Council supports NAIDOC week and encouraged people to join in with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make this a week of recognition, connection and celebration.
