Charity Car Washes

The Council copped lots of flak when it was incorrectly reported that Council was going to ban community groups from car washing activities.

There had been complaints that commercial car washes had to recycle their washing water whilst run-off from car washes goes in to gutters and out to sea.

Council officers put up recommendations for Council to consider and various options were discussed. One is to look at sites where cars can be washed on grassy areas and another is to encourage the use of bio-degradable detergents or washing mitts that don't require soap.

Council acknowledges that car washes are a great way for community groups to fundraise and does not want to stop this activity. I had my car washed recently by some young immigrants from Bhutan who were raising money to purchase traditional musical instruments and costumes. As well as raising money, it gave the young people a chance to get to know one another and to practice their English.
