Lots of people turned up on Sunday 2nd August - National Tree Day - to plant and mulch 1,800 trees at the amazing Cattana Wetlands. Most people had no idea of the rehabilitation that has occurred on this 80 hectares of remnant lowland rainforest and wetlands off Dunne Rd on the way to Yorkeys Knob.
The area that was previously a degraded sand quarry has been transformed. "From a wasteland to a wonderland," said Rob as he gazed over water lilies to where a heron swooped across one of the lakes, the ranges in the background. The Council and the State Government have combined to develop picnic areas, bird viewing platforms, walking tracks, boardwalks, cycleways and interpretive signage. Toilets and carparking too. Over 10,000 trees have already been planted around the various ponds. As the residential areas in Smithfield and the northern beaches increase in density it is going to be an enormous asset to have such a beautiful area where locals can escape to picnic, walk with the kids, cycle, meditate and birdwatch. As it's only 20 minutes from town tourists will soon be discovering the wetlands as well. Watch out for the grand opening later this year. |
