I recently attended a 21st birthday celebratory lunch at James Cook University that coincided with their Open Day. I was working at TAFE in 1987 when the first JCU students were enrolled. The facilities were somewhat basic: demountables out the back where the ground became muddy when it rained. JCU has certainly come a long way since then with its campus at Smithfield, a new dental school being completed and plans for the Cairns Institute looking exciting with its very innovative design that features solar power, solar cooling, passive design to reduce energy costs, and rainwater collected and stored for re-use and to irrigate green areas. JCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding recently co-hosted the Torrid Zone Symposium which was held 23 to 25 August. Professor Harding reminds us that Aristotle once said that, of the three zones of the world - the frigid, the temperate and the torrid - "civilised man" could only live in temperate zones. How wrong he was with Tropical North Queensland joining 2.4 billion people around the world who live in the torrid tropical zone of the world. The Symposium looked at opportunities for our region to demonstrate leadership in the fields of health, education, environment, agriculture and lifestyle. |
