Council has developed the design for the new Cairns Regional Tennis facility that is to be built at North Cairns in the area near the hockey fields. This centre will greatly enhance the regional facilities and, importantly, it will also enable national events to be held in Cairns.

The facility features two new International Tennis Federation standard hard courts and a show court with the provision for a portable grandstand. A new two-storey clubhouse with toilet facilities, change rooms, kiosk, pro-shop, multi-purpose rooms, offices, a gym and additional off street parking facilities are also included.

The Queensland government is contributing $1.9M to the facility, $420,000 is coming from Tennis Queensland and Council will allocate $2.5M to the project.

Construction is scheduled to commence in October 2009 with completion planned for June 2010.

Whilst this facility will be an important asset for the region, Council will continue to support tennis in the suburbs and regional communities; for example, the tennis courts at Holloways Beach have recently had an upgrade.
