It was such a buzz to be amongst the energised people who chose to ride to work on Wednesday 14th October. Council moved the free breakfast from the Spence St chambers onto the Esplanade and it was clearly a good move as more than twice the usual number of people turned up. The first person arrived at 6am looking for bacon and eggs and was disappointed to be told that it was muffins, cereals and fruit this year. Cairns Base Hospital also put on a breakfast for bike riders and I estimate that there would have been more than 500 people at the two venues. People commented on how much safer it is now that McLeod St has bicycle lanes, CBUG (Cairns Bicycle Users Group) recruited new members and Council staff had maps of the new cycleway that is proposed from the Esplanade to the airport turnoff at Aeroglen. Those riders who came all the way from Gordonvale or Edmonton stressed how unsafe they felt on the "rider-unfriendly" route into town from the south. More about the Esplanade the Aeroglen cycleway in another post. |
